TRYING TO CONCEIVE WITH COELIAC DISEASE

This service is only being offered in the Northern Suburbs.

Did you know, undiagnosed Celiac disease increases your risk for recurrent miscarriage by 9 times compared to a woman with known and treated Celiac Disease/no Celiac Disease.

Women with recurrent miscarriage or unexplained subfertility should be screened for Celiac Disease.

After a confirmed diagnosis, it is important to follow a strict gluten-free diet with the help of your Fertility Trained Dietician in order to ensure that your diet is sufficient in Iron, Vitamins D, K, B6, folate and iodine prior to conception.

It is also important that women with Celiac Disease be screened/ closely monitored for thyroid disease and diabetes prior to- and during pregnancy. Your Fertility Trained Dietician will educate you on precautionary dietary measures as well as warning signs to look out for.

Please note that most gluten-free products are NOT fortified, which increases the risk of deficiencies that we want to avoid prior to conception as a pregnancy only increases these requirements. We do not want to start on a minus.

It is preferable to focus on optimising nutrition with adequate time and rectify any malabsorption issues before falling pregnant.
