RED-S AND HYPOTHALAMIC AMENORRHOEA

This service is only being offered in the Northern Suburbs.

Hypothalamic Amenorrhoea

This condition is due to excessive exercise, stress, and weight loss.

If left untreated in young girls, it may delay the commencement of a period and result in underdeveloped sex characteristics. For an adult woman, it can prevent pregnancy and serious bone health issues.

A nutrient-dense diet with sufficient calories, reduction in exercise and better stress management can result in a successful pregnancy.

RED Syndrome (underweight / over-exercise)

RED Syndrome is also known as 'The Female Athlete Triad'.

RED Syndrome is when females experience menstrual dysfunction due to low energy availability and decreased bone mineral density. RED Syndrome is common in athletes/eating disorders and women who enjoy being recreationally active.

Prolonged energy insufficiency in females results in decreased hormone production and then amenorrhoea/dysmenorrhoea as a result thereof. Anovulation increases the risk of osteoporosis and infertility.

It is important to note that it may take months or even years after energy deficits were corrected for menstrual cyclicity to return, but it is possible with the help of your Fertility Trained Dietician.

To ensure optimal healthy bones for your future, your Dietician will evaluate your protein, vitamin C and calcium adequacy.
