A very low-calorie diet provides roughly 800 kcal of energy daily, which is less than half the calorie content of a conventional weight loss diet. The diet must also contain enough protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to help you lose weight safely.

The OPTIFAST programme
OPTIFAST is a medically monitored weight loss programme pioneered over 40 years ago with efficacy that is evidenced in more than 80 clinical studies. The OPTIFAST programme’s multidisciplinary approach combines proven essential features of weight loss success ‒ medical monitoring, nutrition education, exercise guidance, in-person support, full meal replacement and behaviour modification. Full meal replacement can help facilitate stimulus control by decreasing environmental food cues, which may help patients with obesity control the amount and types of food they eat.
How does OPTIFAST work?
The OPTIFAST pr ogramme is recommended for patients with BMI >30kg/m2 or BMI >27kg/m2 with comorbidities. These include individuals whose health status and comorbidities have been exacerbated due to excess weight and those who must lose weight or face potential surgery and/or increased medication use.
Usually lasting 26 to 52 weeks, the OPTIFAST programme is comprised of three phases: 1. Active weight loss 12 to 16 weeks 2. Transition 2 to 4 weeks 3. Long-term management, or maintenance, up to 52 weeks
OPTIFAST's nutritionally complete meal replacements ‒ used as total diet replacements (during active weight loss) ‒ provide all the required vitamins and minerals in an adult diet. Optifast products are also designed to produce rapid and significant weight loss while preserving lean body mass by providing adequate protein. The OPTIFAST products are available as shakes, soups and bars.
